Only 15% of the Imperial Citadel in Hue, former imperial capital of Vietnam, was not destroyed during the Vietnam War’s Tet Offensive, but the foliage-coverage ruins are still atmospheric and the holes left by bombs give an idea of the destruction this country suffered during the war.
The citadel is a huge area of land and there are several buildings and gardens inside it. The most famous is the Forbidden Purple City, where the king (well, the 13 kings Vietnam had) had his concubines. No men were allowed to enter in this area, only women and eunuchs.
The buildings, especially the palace, are very influenced by the Chinese.
Reconstruction works are underway, and something that surprised me is that here both men and women work in this sort of manual work. In the picture you can see one Vietnamese woman carrying bricks, while she was being watched by several men waiting for her to carry everything. I have seen this behaviour in more than one situation here, so I start to believe women here are considered as strong as men, and they really are.

La ciudadela es un área vasta y está formada por varios jardines y edificios. El más famoso es la Ciudad Morada Prohibida, donde el rey (bueno, los 13 reyes que ha tenido Vietnam) tenía sus concubinas. No estaba permitido el acceso a ningún hombre, sólo a mujeres y eunucos.
Los edificios, especialmente el palacio, están muy influidos por los chinos en su manera de construir y decorar.
Se están llevando a cabo trabajos de reconstrucción para en un futuro ver cómo fue la ciudadela en su momento dorado. Una de las cosas que más me ha llamado la atención es que aquí tanto hombres como mujeres trabajan en labores pesadas y duras. En la foto se ve a una mujer cargando ladrillos mientras varios hombres en la obra esperaban a que se los llevaran. Es un comportamiento que he visto en diferentes situaciones aquí, lo que me da que pensar que seguramente las mujeres están consideradas igual de fuertes que los hombres, y queda demostrado que lo son.
